Chosen

The Absolutely Kosher Records sampler arrived in my mailbox the other day. It had "Chosen" handwritten right on it in blue marker. How much more DIY can you get than that. I liked "Hopeless" by The Wrens and Pinback's song on there, "Microtonic Wave." But "In the Union of the Wine," by The Hidden Cameras is one of my favorites too! The Pidgeon song is good too. Really good.

The joys of broadband

I'm normally not around to watch TV programs when they first run, and I don't have TiVo, so I thought I'd missed out on the first episode of Everybody Hates Chris. Thank goodness it's up at Google Video! I think it's my new favorite show. Watch it before the next episode runs Thursday, UPN.

College football Saturday

Big surprise, Colorado lost to No. 12 Miami, but the score wasn't as bad as you might think, 23-3. CU coach Gary Barnett's last school, Northwestern, lost too. Grrr. It came down to the final two minutes. Northwestern should have run more time off the clock. Northwestern lost to Penn State, 34-29, after hopes of a miracle comeback in the final seconds dashed with an interception. I'm OK with Colorado losing. I wish Northwestern could've won one at home. ARRRGH! It's killing me. UVA still has a chance to win today, right? Right?!?

scrabble dabble

One day, www.e-scrabble.com will return. In the meantime, Barn Ape Ted turned in a winning performance at a Scrabble tourney at Delicatessen headquarters last night, with the help of a bluff that no one caught. (For future reference, QUAT is NOT a word!) Carman could've won, if he'd challenged and played the bingo on his rack CONFESS, which he saw but couldn't see where to play. (Shameful, carman, shameful). Delicatessen shall hold more Scrabble bouts. Will keep you posted.

Read it and weep

The Daily Tar Heel's columnist Jillian starts off her Sept. 13 musings with the sentence, "I want all Arabs to be stripped naked and cavity-searched if they get within 100 yards of an airport." It enrages from there. I'm pointing this out only so you can read it yourself and post your comments, either here or at her column. Silence can be mistaken for agreement.

mixtape

Little Radio samplers are like the best mix tape a friend could ever make you. The last one, passed out at SXSW, had gems from Feist, Silversun Pickups, Dungen, Viva Voce, and Giant Drag (20 bands in all!), and now that CMJ is upon us, the next Little Radio sampler is coming out. Denver's own Hobbs NM and Bright Channel are on it, plus Radio Control (with at least one member who fled Colorado), The National, and Stars of Track and Field, and of course more.
