When it comes to spitters, Proof is one of the best. In the latest print edition of Delicatessen, D Tha Man talked to Proof, Eminem's bud and an MC in D12:
Proof talks about his solo album, "Searching for Jerry Garcia":
"I basically call it... what's that called when you go to a methadone clinic? Anyway they give drugs for you to ween you off heroin, right? That's the idea of going to the methadone clinic. So my attempt then (with) the Jerry Garcia sucker right here is to ween people off of hearing me with individuals all the time in a group, cuz they never really heard me solo. So my attempt at doing that is, I say, well, by my controlling my own record label and my dollar amount at the label, I'll have features with people I've always wanted to work with. So I figured combo stuff, like Method Man and B-Real on one song w/ me, me and MC Breed song or Nate Dogg, another member of D12 -- there's different things. So that way, the way you used to hear me, you can still kind of hear that but then you also get the solo feel of how I get down, where it's kinda me doing three verses. You never really get three verses of just Proof, you know what I'm sayin'? So that was my idea of it. Just create an atmosphere where those that used to hear me with everybody else could still hear me with everybody else plus the advantage of different people outside of the Shady Records camp that we never used to work with, you know what I'm sayin'. I'm bringing it all home. (That's) my ideal when I recorded."
On the album title:
"One thing that this industry is lacking is an artist's voice. Jerry Garcia was one of the last people that I can recall with the exception of Jimi Hendrix -- you had Jimi Hendrix, you had Janis Joplin, you had a lot of different people that were true artists. But where Jerry Garcia was unique is that he crossed different genres of music and dealt with different people, and he didn't really care about the record sales. He was out there for the people, you know what I'm sayin'? That's what a real artist is supposed to do. Artists is supposed to explain their art at any given time whenever they can, you know what I'm sayin'. And what I found from his demise is that he died from poor diet, stress and drugs, you know what I'm sayin'. And then to me, if somebody find one of those get his hands on that, you also get with Jerry Garcia, which is some of that Elvis (&) his demise come about. So that's what that's about. You can tell from the way I talk I'm intelligent."
On the song title "Kurt Kobain":
"Kurt Cobain, to me his death seems to me like a homicide. It doesn't seem like a suicide. That's something I wanted to speak about. So I was like well ... I dealed with a lot of different people influenced me in different ways. Like, for him to come from that Seattle area or whatever and create that, he really moved the whole culture there. When Kurt Cobain died, a lot of people committed suicide. That was a great voice. Again this is an artist. People that I really feel are artists I cater to and cling to."
